Rookie Camp Notebook – 09.05.24

Goodbye rain, hello sunshine!

The rookies may not have believed that Calgary is the sunniest city in Canada based off their first couple of days in Cowtown, but the newly coined ‘Blue Sky City’ lived up to its name this morning at McMahon Stadium as the players went to work for Day 2 of camp.

Swiss Army Knife

With their third-round pick (via Winnipeg Blue Bombers) in the 2024 CFL Draft, the Stamps selected local product George Idoko. A defensive end in college for the Saskatchewan Huskies, Idoko has been moved to linebacker as the position group was light entering rookie camp this season.

But the switch doesn’t intimidate the St. Francis High School alum, he’s content to be on the field anyway he can be.

“I love playing football,” said Idoko. “So, I don’t care if I have to play defensive end, safety, cornerback, anything. I just want to be on the field.”

You Got Mossed!

Notorious for catching balls over top defenders, Hall-of-Fame receiver Randy Moss’s famous catches have been turned into an award bestowed to fellow pass-catchers that mimic the incredible grab.

And none other than Red and White rookie camp attendee Josh Vann won the award in 2021.

In a rivalry matchup between the South Carolina Gamecocks and Georgia Bulldogs, the Atlanta native “Mossed” current Los Angeles Rams cornerback Derion Kendrick.

Vann beat out fellow finalists DK Metcalf (Seattle Seahawks receiver), L’Jarius Snead (Kansas City Chiefs defensive back), and Michael Gallup (Dallas Cowboys receiver).

“When I was in college I was playing the Georgia Bulldogs, a rivalry game, and I went up and got the ball,” Vann said simply.

“The crazy thing about it is I was in competition (for the award) with guys in the NFL and the people voted for me to win. That jersey is hanging up in my house back home. It was a pretty awesome award.”
