The Calgary Stampeders would like to congratulate two former members of the Red and White — offensive linemen Miles Gorrell and Dan Ferrone — for being part of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2013.
In addition, former St. Francis Xavier University coach Don Loney — who played for the Stampeders in 1954 — will be inducted in the builders’ category.
The ex-Stamps are part of a group of honourees that also includes Brian Fryer and Earl Winfield in the players’ category and on-field official Jake Ireland in the builders’ category.
“On behalf of the Calgary Stampeders Football Club, I would like to congratulate all the members of this year’s Hall of Fame class,” said Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. “They are all very deserving honourees but I’m especially pleased to see Miles Gorrell, my former teammate, be recognized.”
Gorrell played five seasons with the Stampeders (1978-82) and he served as Calgary’s Director of Canadian personnel in 2004. He played his high school football at Calgary’s Henry Wise Wood.
In addition to his time with the Stampeders, the giant lineman — he stands six-foot-eight — also suited up for the Ottawa Rough Riders, Montreal Concordes, Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Gorrell played a total of 321 games over 19 seasons and earned division all-star honours on five occasions.
Ferrone played 11 of his 12 CFL seasons with the Toronto Argonauts but his lone season in Calgary (1989) was an excellent one as he was named a West Division all-star and was the Stampeders’ nominee for the league’s Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman award.
He was a division all-star nine times in his career and made five league all-star teams.
This year’s Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will be held in Edmonton, with details to be confirmed at a later date.
