Calgary Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce that non-import defensive back Adam Berger has signed with the team. As per club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Berger was selected by Calgary in fourth round (30th overall) of the 2012 CFL Canadian Draft.
Berger played at Simon Fraser University in 2012 and recorded 36 solo tackles, 25 assisted tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, two interceptions, three fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and one blocked kick. Berger also served as an occasional kicker for the Clan in 2012 and connected on one field goal and 13 touchdown conversions for a total of 16 points.
In three seasons for the Clan, he accumulated 87 solo tackles, 60 assisted tackles and eight interceptions including three that he returned for touchdowns. Berger also registered 10.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and one blocked kick.
In high school, Berger played quarterback for Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School in Surrey, B.C., and was the province’s player of the year in 2007.
The Stampeders also announce the release of import receiver Romby Bryant.
“By releasing Romby now instead of waiting until Feb. 15 when he was eligible to become a free agent, we wanted to give him more time to explore opportunities with other teams,” said Hufnagel. “Romby has been a great player and a great person and I thank him for everything he has done for the football club.”
Bryant played 60 regular-season games for the Stampeders and had 210 catches for 3,025 yards and 22 touchdowns. He also made seven playoff appearances for Calgary.
In other transactions, the Stampeders announce the release of import defensive lineman Kenny Pettway and the retirement of non-import offensive lineman Jonathan St. Pierre, who finished the 2012 season on the Stampeders’ practice roster. St. Pierre is retiring from football to pursue a job opportunity.
