Calgary Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce that non-import punter Rob Maver, who was eligible to become a free agent on Feb. 15, has signed a contract extension. As per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Maver was the Canadian Football League and West Division all-star punter in 2012 after leading the league with a net punting average of 36.2 yards. He punted the ball 112 times for 4,839 yards and a gross average of 43.2 yards per kick.
“Rob had a very good season in his first year as a CFL punter and I look forward to seeing him build on his 2012 season,” said Hufnagel, “The special teams were an essential component of the team’s success this past season and Rob was an important contributor to that success.”
Maver was among the CFL leaders in punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line with 24 (just one fewer than the league-leading total) and punts inside the opponents’ 10 with seven. Only two of Maver’s 112 punts were returned for more than 30 yards, another category in which he led the CFL.
The 26-year-old native of Brampton, Ont., broke into the league in 2010 as a place-kicker and won the CFL scoring title with 185 points. That total also set a Stampeders record for points by a rookie. Maver’s 2011 season was limited to just one game because of a quad muscle injury, which led to the Stampeders signing Rene Paredes, who was the CFL’s all-star kicker in 2012.
Maver was the Stamps’ first-round selection, fifth overall, in the 2010 CFL Canadian Draft.
“I’m proud to call Calgary my home year-round and I’m very happy that I will be able to continue my career with the Stampeders,” said Maver. “I’m really excited for the opportunity to continue to work with the guys in the locker-room as well as the coaching staff. I think this is an amazing group with a very bright future and I look forward to what lies ahead in 2013 and beyond.”
